A missing page is a small failure in the journey. A useful 404 page acknowledges it, offers a few sensible paths, and keeps the site’s tone intact.
Give people somewhere to go
Link to the homepage, the main services, the blog or resources, and contact when appropriate. Add search only if the site’s content makes search genuinely useful. Keep the wording clear rather than blaming the visitor.
Fix the source too
Review server logs, analytics, old campaigns, and internal links for repeated missing URLs. Redirect an old page when there is a genuinely close replacement; let unrelated or removed content return a proper 404.
Good website development treats recovery paths as part of the experience.
