Website Accessibility Basics Every Small Business Should Know

Accessibility is not a final polish layer. It is the practice of making a website usable across different abilities, devices, browsers, and situations. The improvements often help everyone: clearer headings, better contrast, useful labels, and predictable navigation.

Start with everyday interactions

Use a logical heading order. Give images meaningful alternative text when they convey information, and empty alt text when they are decorative. Make links descriptive, ensure keyboard focus is visible, label form fields, and do not rely on colour alone to explain a status.

Test with people and tools

Run an automated check, then tab through the site, zoom the page, use a phone, and ask someone unfamiliar with the business to complete a task. Automated tools catch patterns; they do not decide whether the content makes sense.

Accessibility belongs in the scope of a thoughtful website build and in every content update that follows.
