How to Design Website Navigation That Can Grow

Navigation is a promise about where information lives. As a business grows, adding every new page to the main menu makes that promise harder to keep.

Group by visitor need

Start with the questions people bring: what you offer, who it helps, evidence, guidance, and how to contact you. Use labels that make sense to a new visitor, not internal team names.

Design for the next year

Decide which content belongs in primary navigation, which belongs in a service or resource hub, and which should be reached through contextual links. Test the labels with someone unfamiliar with the company.

A clear information architecture is an important part of a thoughtful website build.
